Is Wine Keto? Everything You Need to Know
Is wine keto?
It’s a question we get a lot here at YOURS. With our lineup of wines focused on losing weight and living life as a better, healthier version of you, we’ve worked tirelessly to craft wines that recreate the wine experience you love, but with just 10 calories and 1g carbs per serving.
Many of our customers are keto followers looking for a low-carb wine to scratch that itch. With carb limits that range anywhere from 25g to 50g per day on the high-end, every carb counts when it comes to keto. And many alcoholic drinks can bust that entire allocation with just one serving.
But wine lovers rejoice…there are many different low-carb wine options for you to enjoy! And if you’re looking to enjoy wine while on a keto/low-carb diet, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn more about which options are best for you.
Alcohol and Ketosis
First, a bit of reality. While yes, there are keto wines, any alcohol you drink is going to affect your ketosis and your weight loss. Alcohol is one of the biggest hurdles many people face when they are trying to lose weight. Not only does it add empty calories and carbs, but it also hinders your sleep, your recovery, and your willpower, all of which will end up slowing your progress.
It’s why so many are now turning to non-alcoholic wine while on a diet. They get to keep that evening glass they love, but ditching the bulk of the carbs and calories, making for an easy win.
For those still searching for the alcohol buzz, there are some good options available. You just need to know where to look.
Best Wines to Drink on Keto
If you do decide to drink alcohol while on keto, know that not all wines are created equal. One of the best choices you can make is dry red wines.
As we outlined in our guide on carbs in red wine, though dry red wines are known for their big, bold flavors, they are surprisingly low in sugar, and relatively reasonable when it comes to carbs and calories, making them an excellent option to enjoy while on a keto diet.
Here are some of the best choices for red wine on a keto diet:
- Malbec – 4g carbs per serving
- Pinot Noir – 3.5g carbs per serving
- Shiraz/Syrah – 4g carbs per serving
- Cabernet Sauvignon – 4g carbs per serving
- Petit Sirah – 4g carbs per serving
- Zinfandel – 4g carbs per serving
On the opposite end of the spectrum, be sure to avoid wines with “dessert” or “ice” in the name, as these wines will carry higher levels of sugar, and with that, higher levels of carbs.
One other thing to watch for is the serving size. 5oz is the standard wine pour, but it’s very easy to fill your glass with 7-8 oz (or more!) when at home. Two glasses of wine could turn into four quite easily, which will end up blowing your entire carb budget for the day.
Can You Drink Wine on Keto?
As you can see, there are ways to enjoy wine on keto that won’t bust your entire carb allocation for the day. Stick with dry reds and limit the pours and number of glasses, and you should generally be safe.
And if you really want to take your diet to the next level, challenge yourself to swap 1-2 alcoholic drinks per week for non-alcoholic versions. You’ll be amazed at the difference even these small changes can make in your health, happiness, and success of your diet.
