Non-Alcoholic Moscow Mule Recipe
The Moscow Mule cocktail is an icon. I mean, how many drinks do you know that get their very own custom glass (or in this case, copper mug)?
Now like many geographically named cocktails, the Moscow Mule was actually invented halfway across the world from Russia. In fact, this infamous cocktail was born in the 1940’s right in New York City. Though to be fair, one of the inventors was the President of Smirnoff Vodka (arguably Russia’s most famous vodka at the time), who was visiting a U.S.-based distributor, and playing around with drink ideas using excess inventory of vodka and ginger beer.
Traditionally made with just vodka, lime juice, ginger beer, and lots of mint, the key to the perfect Moscow Mule is fresh ingredients. Fresh mint, fresh lime juice, and plenty of good ice to cool down the liquids and the cooper mug. When done correctly, this classic cocktail is one of the most enjoyable things you can ever order at the bar.
But what about those looking for a Moscow Mule without alcohol?
Well, there are a few ways to go here. Some simply remove the vodka and drink the non-alcoholic ginger beer and lime juice. However as anyone who has done this will tell you, the experience is not the same. These potent liquids need the alcohol (or some sort of substitute) to cut through. Otherwise, the flavors are just too overpowering.
For our take on a Classic Non-Alcoholic Moscow Mule, we like to substitute the vodka for Seedlip Garden 108 Non-Alcoholic Spirit. Arguably more like a gin substitute than a vodka, this alcohol-free spirit is distilled using fresh plants and vegetables, making it a perfect complement for the fresh mint and lime in the mule. It also helps cut some of the potency of the lime juice and ginger beer, leaving you with the perfectly balanced non-alcoholic cocktail.
