Non-Alcoholic Virgin Piña Colada Recipe
If you like piña coladas…
There are few cocktails so iconic that they can claim they had a #1 hit song written about them. But the piña colada? Well, this tropical treat was part of the hook of Rupert Holmes’ song Escape, which topped the Billboard charts in December of 1979.
How’s that for a legacy?
Of course, there’s a lot to love about the classic piña colada. Invented in 1954 at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico, piña coladas are a rich, refreshing tropical cocktail that pairs perfectly with the sun on your shoulders and your toes in the sand. Unfortunately, in the years following its peak on the Billboard charts, the piña colada took a nosedive in popularity. Instead of fresh fruit, many home and professional bartenders outside the drink’s home in Puerto Rico started opting for sugary flavored syrups and blending their piñas into a slush-like consistency. This was especially true for anyone looking to order a non-alcoholic virgin piña colada, which without the booze, tasted more like a sugary dessert than a well-balanced cocktail.
Thankfully, there’s been a recent resurgence of the classic piña colada recipe, which relies on fresh pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, and cream of coconut. And with plenty of great non-alcoholic rum options, including Lyre’s White Cane Spirit Non-Alcoholic Rum, it’s easier than ever to craft a delicious, authentic alcohol-free virgin piña colada.
